Paul Sohar was student and a closet poet when he fled his native Hungary in 1956. He was given refuge in he US where he got a degree in philosophy and a day job in pharmaceutical research. He also continued his literary pursuits in every genre, eventually publishing eight books of translation and two volumes of his own poetry: Homing Poems (2006) and The Wayward Orchard (2011). Translation though remains central to his work and best suited o his eclectic style. He concentrated on Kányádi in response to the editors of literary magazines who liked him best of all Hungarian poets.
